Description

It was a class of heavy mixed-traffic locomotives of the 4-8-2 "Mountain" arrangement, which uses four pairs of driving wheels with a four-wheel guiding truck in front for stability at speed and a two-wheel trailing truck to support the large firebox needed for sustained power. Although built for both passenger and freight work, they spent most of their service lives hauling heavy high-speed freight trains. Many PRR men counted the M1 class locomotives as the best steam locomotives the railroad ever owned.

Highly claimed as agreed to be the best steam locomotives on the Pennsylvania Railroad ever built for freight service, the 'M-1' class 4-8-2's provided both immense strength and high speed.
Although they were originally designed for mixed traffic service, sporadic passenger assignments had entitled them to Keystone number-plates rather than a standard round freight number-plate.
Because of the extensive electrification and a large surplus of K4s class pacifics available for passenger services, every 'M-1' class Mountain was used primarily on urgent heavier freights.
Back from 1923 to 1926, the 1st prototype spent being tested which resulted in a 1st order of (200) to be built both by Lima and Baldwin, followed by (100) more being ordered in 1930.
Producing 69,700 Ibs of tractive effort saddling on (8) 72 inch driving wheels, this power enabled the M1's to haul over 100 cars at speeds exceeding about 65 mph.
Today only one of the original (301) class 'M-1's remains at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania on display.
